According to a report by Laura A. McLay of VCU heavier drivers consume more gas than petite drivers. “Americans now pump 938 million gallons of fuel more on a yearly basis than they were in 1960 because of their increasing weight.”
“The report’s conclusions are drawn from mathematical computations of weight gain applied to passenger vehicles, including cars and light trucks driven for non-commercial reasons.”
The study will be published in the upcoming edition of The Engineering Economist.
I can not believe Laura A. McLay is saying this. I want to see the formula where this is proven. I know that having more weight in your car can eat up fuel, but honestly how much can weight factor into how much gas you waste?
This just seems like another way to get Americans off the idea of rising fuel costs and place the blame on those Americans who are overweight. I’m not the smallest person in the world, but I can not believe they would go as far as subliminally telling us to lose weight in order to save money on gas.
On a lighter note I found a story that warmed my heart. A company that makes fire hoses and products for the military are welcoming employees with disabilities. There are currently over 100 employees working there with some type of disability, in this case blindness.
The company is working to make machines safer. Employee’s are trained to make these products without being able to see what they are doing. The employees interviewed in the piece seem to love their job.
I think this is great. Letting employee’s with disabilities feel welcome and useful is important to the development of their self-esteem. It is also extremely beneficial to society. Like it stated in the video almost 75% of those disabled are currently unemployed.
I do not believe we should judge one another by our disabilities, but give everyone an equal chance to participate.
Today I’m talking about something heartbreaking. A dog was brutally dragged behind a truck. When a couple witnessed the abuse the truck pulled off to the side of the road untied the dog and left him there to die. Witnesses ran over and rescued the dog. The dog survived and is expected to make a complete recovery.
The reason I am writing is because I can not believe that someone could do this. I love animals and find them extremely loving. Whoever did this should be punished. Animal abuse is a serious issue, and this animal did not do anything to deserve this.
If you witnessed this type of abuse what would you do to help?
Ladies listen up. The “Today” Show and Connie Morbach, a microbiologist at Sanit Air conducted a hidden camera experiment testing the germs found in cosmetics. They found that many women walked right up and stuck there finger into the eye shadow, lip gloss, ect. even when they were provided with an application tool. What they found was staphylococcus.
“While this is a bacterium that is often found on surfaces that people touch, but some samples contained an infectious species of staphylococcus.”
What does this mean for women? Look out, contracting staphylococcus can cause “pink eye” and “staph infections.”
I have never got the urge to try on new makeup. I just wanted to give a heads up to all those women out there tell them to watch out and be careful.
Are men smarter than women? Phil Rushton the professor that conducted this experience says yes. He reviewed 100,000 SAT scores. Those reviewed were 17-18 years old. Does gender have to do with it?
The video interviews a man from the brain institute and he states ” A women’s intelligence is located in the front of the brain. The men’s intelligence is located on the side of the brain, but are equally distributed among the two genders.”
To sum up the study they found that men are smater than women. But is important to stress by only 4 IQ points.
Personally, being a woman myself I could go either way. It has been my observation throughout the years that women are more common sense smart. I’m going to be honest when it comes to math I’m terrible. Come on 4 IQ points, not a significant difference to call men smarter than women.
“HIV is Gay” the newest advertisement in the prevention of aids is stirring up a lot of controversy. I located this on Cnn.com in the video section. There was no published article. The Aids campaign didn’t put these words on their newest billboards but did hand them out as window shop advertising. I think that this is unfair to categorize a certain group.
A women in the video said 75% of those infected with HIV are men. Even so, everyone can get the disease and targeting a certain group may have negative effects. Young influencial teenagers seeing the advertisement may get the impression they will not get the disease because they are not gay. HIV is a serious disease and letting everyone know about it is important. There are other ways of doing it without discriminating towards a certain group.
